Myths that people have about SEO and PPC marketing
By: Mallory Davenport
Creating a website for your business is an important part of marketing your business to different types of people, but what good is having a website if no one can find it? Search engine optimization and pay-per click marketing are two ways to make sure your website is visible on all the search engines in order for potential customers to find your business. Without taking advantage of these two forms of marketing, you might as well forget about receiving a good ranking on the search engines. Although these may be two of the best ways to get your name out there on the internet, there are many myths about SEO and PPC that either drive people away from these marketing strategies or lead a website to failure.
One common myth between both marketing strategies is that both marketing strategies can have instantaneous results. SEO is a very long process that many people do not seem to realize, and Brandon Dennis, in an article on Tnooz, explains it perfectly. “If you were to search for ‘hotels in Miami’ or ‘Seattle hotels’, we see Expedia, Hotels.com and TripAdvisor as the top three results for the first query, and TripAdvisor, Expedia, and Travelocity for the second. In fact, no single, independent hotel ranks on the first page at all for either query, outside the Local block.” Optimizing a website would take years in order to obtain those rankings and even then, it still may not be possible. In order to achieve a top spot on the search engines, intense keyword research is needed to determine which keywords will be able to provide you with a top spot, not just choosing the most popular keyword out there.
PPC is another marketing strategy that has an even bigger myth on instantaneous results. Although you will eventually be able to see the results of people clicking on your link once you’ve achieved a paid spot, it takes time to determine which keywords will get you there, and how much you may need to spend in order to accomplish the traffic you are looking for.
Although instantaneous results may be the biggest myth on PPC and SEO marketing, they certainly aren’t the only ones. SEO marketing is also said to be successful by stuffing keywords into the content of your site, and that you can buy your number one spot. For starters, keywords are a very important part of optimizing a website, but there is a limit to the amount of keywords used. There is not average number used on a site but, overstuffing content with keywords can lead to Google’s algorithms determining your site as spam and cause a removal from the search engine. That can have a negative effect on your website instead of bettering the results. That myth about buying your number one spot? Just as unachievable as keyword stuffing. As stated above, it can be nearly impossible to get a top ranking for a certain keyword phrase, so research and tests are needed in order to determine which keywords are best for your website.
SEO isn’t the only strategy that has myths about results. With PPC, it has been envisioned that the top placement equals top sales. This isn’t always the case and should never be promised. It has been found that the top placement may get more traffic, but it doesn’t mean that they necessarily get the sales. It may be more beneficial to aim for the top three results, rather than shooting for the number one spot. One last huge myth about PPC has to do with the traffic of results. Many people believe that the majority of the clicks on PPC listings are spam. This isn’t the case, because Google runs algorithms to block spam clicking, which leaves the majority of your traffic real people that are clicking on your links out of interest.
There may be a few myths on SEO and PPC marketing, but that does not mean that these strategies aren’t affective. Without SEO or PPC marketing, your website may never be visible on the internet which cannot cause an increase in sales.
